NEBOSH Construction Certificate: a safer way of working

Adam Burroughes, Reliability Maintenance Site Manager at PB Leiner, trained for the NEBOSH Construction Certificate with Capital People. We’ve asked him a few questions about his experience.

What role were you working in before taking this qualification?

My current job title is reliability maintenance Site Manager at PB Leiner UK. My role is to manage the maintenance department and annual budget allocation. Whilst my role hasn’t changed, my responsibilities are now far greater.

What made you decide to study for this qualification?

In the coming months, I’ll be managing a lot more projects. I now have greater knowledge on applying the CDM (Construction Design and Management) rules to the core areas, which will eliminate as many risks as possible and improve safety.

What were the main challenges in studying this qualification?

Managing full-time employment, particularly if your employer has paid for the course. But of course, it’s important to find the time as it’s a great qualification to have and will strengthen your understanding.

What was the best part of the training

The breakdown of the responsibilities of key roles, to know who oversees what and when. This information has been the most important to me and my work.

How has this achievement changed your career?

It has certainly given me a broader understanding of how the CDM setup is controlled, and I’m able to implement a safer way of working in the future. It has also allowed me to expand more into the project side of things.

The course allows you to apply the CDM mindset at all times, and instead of relying on external contractors at an extortionate cost, the skillset is already within your own company providing you undertake the training.

How did you find the learning experience with Capital?

Really positive. I have a great working relationship with Mark, which is informal but professional. We can contact Mark with any questions, and he will reply quickly with support and guidance.

What advice would you give to non-safety persons who are thinking of doing a safety qualification?

Naturally, do it! There is so much information provided which is very useful in day-to-day working. The training will encourage you to stop and think, being mindful of the hierarchy of controls, and reducing hazards. The training also works as a great checklist for daily activities. Once the CDM setup is implemented, it’s not scary at all.
