NEBOSH Certificate: change your attitude to health & safety

Alun Rees, Safety Manager at King Site Services, trained for the NEBOSH Certificate with Capital People. We’ve asked him a few questions about his experience.

What is your current role?

Up until April 2020, I was working as a rigger. Shortly after, I took over my father’s business, King Site Services, as a director. Since completing the qualification, I’ve taken on a more health and safety-focused role, picking up the risk assessment, toolbox talks, and other responsibilities like that.

What made you decide to study for this qualification?

I thought it would be a good idea to extend my knowledge on the topics to be able to carry out my role more efficiently. Until I took part in the training, I hadn’t realised the importance of the laws and just how many there are.

What were the main challenges in studying this qualification?

I would say running a business, and studying, as I had to take 10 days out. Personally, I would rather be based in a classroom environment but because of COVID-19, we completed the course remotely. Mark Littlejohns was there constantly, recommending we get in contact whenever needed. I achieved a great mark because of his help. Throughout the course, I asked questions, which may have been ridiculous to some, but he always answered in a helpful way. It is important to double-check and seek guidance to gain the most points possible.

What was the best part of the training?

The best part was learning how to undertake a risk assessment properly and Mark is thorough with his explanation. The template has a solid structure, and although I did risk assessments before, Mark’s training has really tightened the process. I now have more understanding of how a good risk assessment should look.

How has this achievement changed your career?

It’s 100% changed my attitude. Before doing the course, I was always interested in safety as I own the business, but I’m really into it now, and I’m thinking about doing the construction course next. I’m inspired to take this as far as possible; I love the challenge of putting these rules in place. I approach the role differently in a cooler manner, helping staff and removing obstacles. Employers often don’t think of health and the long-term effects of actions in the workplace.

How did you find the learning experience with Capital?

Really good – Mark always takes time out to help and gives us work to complete. As soon as we email across, he marks and emails straight back. As a trainer, he was there every time we approached for guidance.

What advice would you give to non-safety persons who are thinking of doing a safety qualification?

They have got to do it. I have two partners, who are often pushed for time. I did the course as it’s so important to know the laws, policies, and procedures. It has also meant that if circumstances changed, I know I have a good chance of getting a safety job elsewhere because I have upskilled.
