Points-based Immigration

From an employment and HR perspective, the end of the Brexit transition period means that EU citizens no longer have an automatic right to live and work in the UK. Instead, since 1 January 2021, EU citizens arriving in the UK are subject to a new points-based immigration system. Like hires from the rest of the world, except Ireland, they need a visa.

The new points-based system is very similar to the old points-based system for hires from outside of the EU, with some subtle changes. For example, there is a new “skilled worker” route, which replaces the old “tier 2” visa route. This new route has a lower minimum salary and skill threshold which should, in theory, make it easier for employers to make international hires.

Employers who regularly hire from outside the EU will already be familiar with the visa sponsorship process, and the ongoing checks and balances that need to be undertaken to avoid falling foul of UK immigration rules (for which criminal sanctions apply). But for many, this will be unfamiliar territory.

This module will help you get to grips with the new rules quickly, so that you can access the widest talent pool while minimising legal risk.
